FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about acupuncture and massage. Please reach out if you have any questions that aren't answered here, or would like to discuss something further.
What happens at my first appointment?
If you've never had massage or acupuncture before, it's normal to have questions. Here's what to expect at each step, so nothing about your visit has to be a guess.
What should I wear? Do I have to remove my clothes?
You can wear whatever you want! For massage, most people choose to remove all of their clothes, or all of their clothes except for their underwear. Any amount of clothing is okay with me! I can work around anything you leave on, and can do massage while you are fully clothed if that feels more comfortable, and if you choose to remove clothes, all private areas will remain covered in accordance with professional draping standards, at all times.
For acupuncture, I will do my best to work around any clothing you prefer to leave on, and can chose points that aren't covered if that is your preference. If you have the option, I'd recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing, so you can relax on the table, but don't stress about it. There's no wrong way to do self care!
Will I be covered with a drape?
Absolutely! I drape in accordance with professional standards. This means that all private areas will be covered at all times. Female breasts and all genitals will remain draped throughout the duration of the session.
Does massage or acupuncture hurt?
No, neither massage or acupuncture will hurt. We will stay in contact through the duration of your session to make sure everything is feeling comfortable. I'll be doing the treatment, but you'll be the one in the "driver's seat". We'll work together to create a productive and enjoyable treatment.
With massage, pressure and techniques can be adjusted so you are receiving a happy balance of therapeutic benefit and peak relaxation.
With acupuncture, the needles I use are very thin- about the diameter of two human hairs. Additionally, I am trained in gentle needling techniques to minimize the sensation. Some needles you probably won't even feel, and the needles that you do feel will be felt in a dull way, not a sharp or painful way.
How do I know if massage or acupuncture will work for me?
You can find a list of commonly treated conditions here. If you don't see your condition listed, that doesn't mean we can't help, just that we haven't added your condition yet. Please feel free to reach out via email, text, or phone for a free consultation prior to booking your appointment. We’ll be happy to discuss your concerns.
Can I ask for changes during a session?
Yes! I love receiving feedback during a session and always appreciate your participation in creating the perfect session! Pressure, positioning, areas of focus, temperature, conversation level, and techniques can be changed or stopped at any time. Consent is part of the session, not a one-time checkbox.
Can accommodations be requested?
Absolutely! Our office is proud to be completely ADA accessible for those who need it, and we are educated and experienced in working with various accommodations. When we say we provide "care for every body", we mean it. Accessibility, sensory, communication, mobility, and positioning needs will be discussed prior to beginning your session, and if you have any concerns we encourage you to reach out prior to your appointment so we can discuss how to optimize your experience.
Some populations we currently work with include: People with autism, PTSD, dissociative identity disorder, various sensory needs, scent-sensitive folks, wheelchair users, and more. If you have ever felt like acupuncture or massage was inaccessible to you, please reach out. Let's change that.
I'm sensitive to smells. Do you use fragrances in your office?
No, our office is fragrance free.
Should I talk or stay quiet during my massage?
Whatever you'd like! I will not initiate conversation because I want your massage to be your time to relax in whatever way you’d like. If talking feels most comfortable, then go right ahead!
What if I fall asleep durring my session?
I take snores compliments! If you fall asleep, I’ll gently wake you at the end of your session or when it’s time to turn over.
Am I expected to tip?
Nope! NCIW is proud to be a tip-free establishment. If you find yourself pleased with the work we do, the most meaningful gift you can give us is a Google review or referring a friend.
